New Hope native Penny Sansing Mansell always had a creative streak and a flair for simplistic, colorful designs. “Penny always was a doodler — doodling and drawing,” said her mother, Olivia Sansing, a retired elementary school teacher.
Mansell never expected that her hobby would take on as much of a role in her life as it has. After graduation from New Hope High School in 1998, she attended Mississippi University for Women, earning a bachelor’s degree in communication in 2002. She works today in marketing for a firm in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
But, two years ago, something unexpected happened. As a baby shower gift for a friend, Mansell made a customized painting for a child’s nursery. When the recipient unwrapped the gift, Mansell’s painting was a hit, and drew exclamations from all present. What had been an occasional pursuit, a simple hobby, became much more when orders began to pour in.
Penny needed a name for her whimsical paintings and decorated items for children’s rooms. She decided to call her creations DaisyMaes. Since then, she has established a line of DaisyMaes in a Tuscaloosa store, Katelyn’s korner, and sells them from a Web site, www.daisymaes.net. For awhile, she operated a kisosk in a mall selling them.
“I had no idea whatsoever this would happen,” said Mansell, who married her husband John Mansell a year ago. “It just completely snowballed. Word got out around Tuscaloosa.”
Making it personal
Her personalized pieces utilize popular children’s motifs — anything from flowers to animals to trains to hair bows. Mansell became adept at personalizing her artwork in whimsical lettering styles suited to a boy, a girl or either. Without duplicating a motif precisely, she makes some designs to coordinate with popular bedding and furnishings sold at Target or department stores. The designs may grace anything from ornaments to lap trays to waste baskets to lunchboxes.
Some pieces have Bible scriptures or cute sayings incorporated into the design.
One of Mansell’s more popular pieces is a baby announcement painted on canvas, “It’s a boy” or “It’s a girl” and a baby. The canvas has ribbons for hanging it on the doorknob of a hospital room. “People would call ahead about a baby announcement, and I would get it ready,” she said. “Then, I would add the name, date and weight when they called again, and bring it right on.”
Mansell has sold her Daisymaes at several area festivals, including the Prairie Arts Festival in West Point in 2006 and at Lake Lowndes. She will have a booth to sell them at Market Street Festival on May 4.
“The best part about being able to do a show is you get to spend time with friends and family,” says Mansell, who is looking forward to visiting with friends she seldom sees anymore. Sansing, her mother and regular helper, will be assisting with the booth.
Market Street, for enthusiasts
Mansell will be one of hundreds of vendors selling fun and practical crafts and items during the annual festival in downtown Columbus. Sponsored by Main Street Columbus, the festival was attended by an estimated 35,000 people last year.
Market Street offers a variety of goods and attractions for people with all kinds of special interests. Among the vendors, the Lowndes County Master Gardeners will be selling pass-along heirloom bedding plants, all propogated or potted from their own gardens — dogwoods, redbuds, cherry bark, nandinas, antique roses, antique iris, daylilies, cannas and much, much more.
